Hey PST Parents!

Now that we have three meets under our belt, you have probably heard rumblings regarding the Champ Series.  And if you are new to the team, you are probably wondering what all the fuss is about.  The Champ Series is like the finals for our swim league.  It is divided into three distinct sessions – Novice, Reserve and Champ.  There is more information below regarding each session (Champ Series 101).  The Champ Series will be held at the Texas City Natatorium located at  1900 5th Avenue North  in  Texas City .  The dates and times are listed here, but the times are subject to change:

The Novice Meet will be on July 10 with a 10:00 a.m. start time.  Check-in will start at 8:30 a.m. and end at 9:00 a.m.

The Reserve Meet will be on July 10 with a 1:15 p.m. start time.  Check-in will start at 11:45 a.m. and end at 12:15 p.m.

The Champ Meet will be on July 11 with an 8:15 a.m. start time.  Check-in will start at 6:45 a.m. and end at 7:15 a.m.

We will be sending out an email with particulars for signing up for the meets online.

The Last Chance Meet is open to all swimmers listed on their team's Master Roster, and who have competed in a minimum of two (2) CCSL sanctioned swim meets (only one of which may have been a mini-meet). Swimmers should be within 3 seconds of achieving their Champ time. Times from the Last Chance Meet may be used as seed times for the Champ Meet, but participation in the Last Chance Meet does not count towards the minimum sanctioned meet requirement.  The Last Chance Meet will be on July 6.  We have not received the details for this one yet.  But in the past they have had a start time of 6:30 p.m.  You will be responsible for your on-deck entry and that is usually done 1-2 hours beforehand.  There will be an entry fee for each event.  The Last Chance Meet will all be held at Galena Park ISD Natatorium at  15027 Wallisville Road , Houston   77049 .  As soon as the invitation comes for this, we will be sending it out.

To determine your child’s time, you can visit the PST website and go to 2010 Top Times.  If your child has an “a” by their name, they have gotten a Champ Time.  If your child has a “b” by their name, they have gotten a Reserve Time.

And of course, we will need volunteers to work the Champ Series.  If your child is swimming in one of the meets (does not include Last Chance), you will need to volunteer as a timer, concessions, hospitality or officials.  It will be first come, first serve.  Send your name to info@pearlandswimteam.com to sign up.

Below is some information for you to chew on.  If you have any questions, please let me know, and I will try to answer them or get the answer from someone who knows more than me.

Sincerely,

Genine Burchell

Secretary

CHAMP SERIES 101

Helpful information for the CCSL Champ Series

CHAMP SERIES

In an effort to answer questions regarding eligibility for the three sessions of the Champ Meet Series — i.e., novice, reserve and champ — the following dissertation is offered.

OVERALL ELIGIBILITY

To participate in the Championship Meet Series, a swimmer must have competed in at least two regular-season CCSL meets for the team by whom he is entered; and time trials do not count as a regular-season meet for this purpose; additionally, a swimmer must have been on his team's master roster at least two meets prior to the start of the Championship Meet Series.

12-UNDER AGE GROUP SWIMMERS

A swimmer in age groups through age 11-12, NOT having achieved a reserve time for an event, is eligible to swim in the Novice Meet in that event subject to the "three individual events" rule described later.  A reserve time in an event qualifies a swimmer to swim in the Reserve Meet for that event, subject to the "three individual events" rule.  A champ time in an event qualifies a swimmer to swim in the Champ Meet in that event, subject to the "three individual events" rule.

13-&-OLDER AGE GROUP SWIMMERS

Swimmers in 13-&-older age groups MAY NOT swim in the Novice Meet. All 13-&-older swimmers are automatically eligible for the Reserve Meet for an event if they have not achieved a champ time in that event, subject to the "three individual events" rule. There are, therefore, no published reserve qualifying times for 13-&-older swimmers. Swimmers can enter the Reserve Meet with an "NT" [no time] for an event [i.e., they did not even swim the event during the regular season].  A champ time in an event qualifies a swimmer to swim in the Champ Meet in that event, subject to the "three individual events" rule.

6-UNDER SWIMMERS

During the Championship Meet Series, swimmers who swam in the 6-&-under category during the season will swim in 8-&-under event categories. There are no separate 6-&-under events at the Novice, Reserve or Champ Meets. 6-&-unders must meet 8-&-under qualifying times.

RELAYS

There are no relay events at the Novice or Reserve Meets for any age groups.

INDIVIDUAL EVENT LIMITATION

The "three individual events" rule states that a swimmer may only swim a total of three individual events during the entire Champ Meet Series [plus two relays], which encompasses the novice session [a.k.a. the Novice Meet], the reserve session [a.k.a. the Reserve Meet] and the champ session [a.k.a. the Champ Meet]. The entire series of three sessions is considered ONE 3-session meet, with overall meet participation limitations.  AN EXCEPTION to this rule is allowed if, while swimming in either the novice or reserve sessions, a swimmer equals or betters an event's qualifying time for the subsequent meet. In this case, the swimmer may enter that same event in the subsequent meet without being charged with entering another individual event.  For example, 10-year old Johnny enters the Novice Meet with NT's in the 50 free [event 32], 50 backstroke [event 44] and 50 breast [event 54] events. But he did meet the overall Champ Meet Series participation eligibility requirements by swimming in at least two meets during the season [in other events] and was on his team's master roster at least two meets prior to the Champ Meet Series. Johnny also wanted to swim the 50 fly [event 64] for which he also had an NT, in the Novice Meet, but he can only swim three events in the Novice Meet, so he chooses to forego the 50 fly for the entire 3-session series.  Johnny swims events 32, 44 and 54 in the Novice Meet and makes a reserve time in each event.  He can now also enter the Reserve Meet and must swim the same event numbers 32, 44 and 54.  Johnny does indeed enter the Reserve Meet in the same events 32, 44 and 54 and makes a champ time in each of the events. He can now also enter the Champ Meet and must swim the same event numbers 32, 44 and 54.  But Johnny suddenly remembers that he actually DID have a champ time in the 50 fly and wants to now swim that at the Champ Meet instead of the 50 free for which he just qualified in the Reserve Meet. Sorry, he's out of luck. He has locked himself into the three events he has been swimming all series. He should have only swum two of the other three events for which he had NT.  Thus, in this highly unlikely but possible scenario, he can legally swim NINE total individual events in the series, but only the same events each meet.
